SOCCER 6 POOL OF THE WEEKEND
Saturday 1 May S6 V3 P1
M1 Bloemfontein Celtic vs Kaizer Chiefs: Carryover-boosted pool that should total some R500,000. Four of Celtic’s last five games have ended in 1-1 draws. Chiefs followed their come-from-behind win against champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday with a home defeat to struggling Chippa United midweek.
M2 Chippa United vs Stellenbosch FC: Chippa United have not won a home league game since November and have gone nine without success since. Stellenbosch have proven strong on the road this season.
M3 Lamontville Golden Arrows vs AmaZulu: Durban derby as the two sides battle for second place in the DStv Premiership. They last met in the Nedbank Cup in February, when they drew 1-1 and AmaZulu won on penalties.
M4 TS Galaxy vs Cape Town City: Galaxy return to Mbombela Stadium as their home after using Ellis Park as a home base the last time and losing to relegation-threatened TTM. City’s last away game was victory over Kaizer Chiefs at Soccer City.
M5 SuperSport United vs Baroka FC: Out-of-sorts SuperSport are unbeaten in their last four games against Baroka, winning three with a goal aggregate of 10-3.
M6 Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila vs Black Leopards: Local derby, but more important, a battle to get away from the bottom of the PSL table. This is the second of four successive home games for TTM.
SOCCER 10 POOL OF THE WEEKEND
Sunday 2 May V3
M1 Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns: Likely R2-million pool as a result of a R100,000 carryover. Pirates might be a little fatigued after a midweek trip to Nigeria, while champions Sundowns are also showing some frailty. But they did thrash Pirates 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final this month.
M2 Bologna vs Fiorentina: Four of the last five matches between these two Italian sides have ended in draws. Fiorentina won the odd one out 4-0.
M3 Napoli vs Cagliari: Napoli’s last home game was a 5-2 thrashing of fellow front-runners Lazio. Cagliari have won their last three games to move out of the Serie A relegation places.
M4 Newcastle United vs Arsenal: Newcastle have lifted themselves clear of the relegation places with eight points from their last four Premier League outings. Arsenal continue to splutter along despite some quality players.
M5 Sassuolo vs Atalanta: Atalanta have won eight in a row against Sassuolo and another would help their cause as they bid for a Champions League place again next season.
M6 KAA Gent vs KV Mechelen: Ghent have scored 11 goals in winning their last two Belgian league matches. Mechelen have netted eight in their past two fixtures.
M7 Villarreal vs Getafe: Villarreal are still chasing a place in European club competition next season but have lost their past two La Liga games. Getafe’s win over Huesca last weekend lifted them clear of the relegation zone.
M8 Montpellier vs St Etienne: Montpellier have won the previous two games against St Etienne with a 1-0 scoreline.
M9 AIK Stockholm vs Elfsborg IF: AIK and Elfsborg have both begun their new Swedish season with two wins and a defeat. Elfsborg were runners-up last year, when AIK finished a disappointing ninth.
M10 Manchester United vs Liverpool: Liverpool’s last two trips to Old Trafford in the league both ended in stalemates, United did beat them 3-2 at home in the FA Cup in January.
