There is nothing like a victory to change the mood and energise a club and Sheffield United will be desperate to continue the new-found sensation when they host Newcastle United in the Premier League tonight.
With just two points from 17 games, the Blades have set a new low for any team at the start of a season in English league history – from the top flight on to the fourth.
But the FA Cup presented them with an opportunity to snap their desperate run and although they made heavy work of it, they beat third tier outfit Bristol Rovers 3-2 on Saturday to advance.
It must have come, first of all, as major relief but then also a massive filip. Given how poorly Newcastle have played of late, Sheff Utd must now believe they can win a first league match of the campaign and begin to turn around their season.
Punters should still get good odds on them winning, so this seems a bet to take.
More difficult to forecast is Wolverhampton Wanderer at home to Everton, although the way they dispatched Crystal Palace in the cup on Friday suggests home advantage could be key.
Burnley have a poor home record against Manchester united and if that continues tonight, then the Red Devils will go top of the table. It is a remarkable turn-around from just a few months ago when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s head was on the chopping block.
